What Have The Skipton Craven Rotary Club Been Up To?

By Brian Stott

So, my first two weeks as President of Skipton Craven Rotary Club are done.

It has been good so far.

I took over from the President for 2016-17 George Garland on 27th June. The Club members had a celebration meal at Skipton Golf Club.

When I joined Rotary in 2004 I was invited to become a member by Ted Lee. Many of you will remember Ted as the owner of Farmhouse Fare Pie Shop at the top of the High Street in town.

Sadly Ted passed away a few years back now but his daughter Janet has taken over the business and I thought it would be good to recognise my gratitude to Ted for getting me into Rotary by having a meal where the whole menu consisted of things from Ted’s shop. So we had a Pork Pie Platter Starter and a Mixed Grill Main Course. Everyone really enjoyed it and it kicked off my year well. We also had some entertainment from a small group from the Steeton Male Voice Choir.

Since then we have had a Members Quiz Night and here are some pictures of the winners with their prizes!

Then last Sunday 9th July a group of us helped out at the Annual Manorlands Garden Party at Sue Ryder Oxenhope. We were on the gates taking donations for programs as people arrived. People were so generous and our collecting buckets were very heavy and included much cash of the folding variety. The whole event raised £15000 in total.

We at Skipton Craven Rotary have been supporters of this event for over 15 years. We also organise our Santa Fun Run each year and Manorlands are one of the main beneficiaries of this and each year we are able to give them over £10,000 from this great event. This year’s Run is on 26th November. Only July but we already have entrants. Go to www.skiptonsantafunrun.com to enter, we had 1300 last year and hope to beat this in 2017.

We are constantly giving out the funds we raise throughout the year and I am pleased to say that recently we have given £250 to Alzheimer’s Charity and £150 to Leeds Autism Services.

At our next meeting on Tuesday 18th we are going to have a Presentation by Keith Widdop of Marie Curie Cancer Charity and I am sure we will be making a donation to this excellent charity.

This is our Club Website if you would like to take a closer look at what we do.
