In 2016, 20-year old Samuel Carroll took his own life after seeking medical help and being turned away. This year, his family are hosting an event at The Black Horse pub to celebrate his life and raise funds for mental health charity, MIND. They have been tirelessly campaigning since Samuel’s death, to raise awareness of mental health issues in men.
The Samaritans Suicide Statistics Report 2017 showed that in 2015 alone, there were 6,639 suicides in the UK and Ireland. 4,997 of these were men. By hosting regular fundraising events, Samuel’s family are hoping to encourage more local males to talk about their issues rather than struggling alone and potentially seeing suicide as their only option. The motto for their campaigning is ‘Even though you’re fed up, you have to keep your head up’.
Samuel Carroll’s Celebration of Life – May 5th 2018
Samuel’s celebration of life will take place at The Black Horse on 5th May 2018 – exactly two years since Samuel ended his life. There will be a local DJ present on the night, playing some of Samuel’s favourite tracks and setting the mood for what should be a great party in memory of a very popular young man. The event starts at 8 pm and there is no entry charge, however, the family ask that attendees participate in some of the various fundraising activities on offer.
If you own a local business and can offer anything which may contribute to the success of the event such as sponsorship or raffle prizes, please contact Louise Whiteside at The Black Horse, Skipton.
