They’re Bloomin’ Brilliant!

Formed in 2005, Skipton in Bloom is a community group committed to helping Skipton, well, bloom!  The group’s members represent Craven College, the Stepping Stones II Project, Craven Volunteer Centre, the two Skipton Rotary clubs, Yorkshire Housing, Skipton Gardeners Club, Skipton Town Council, local residents and volunteers and is supported financially by Skipton BID and other sponsors.

Their Vision Is To:

  • Make Skipton more attractive for all who visit, live and work in the town
  • Encourage people to be more actively involved in the aesthetic values of the town
  • Encourage local pride
  • Stimulate horticultural interest by working with enthusiastic individuals, schools and other groups
  • Act as an umbrella organisation for local horticultural and environmental groups
  • Enhance the reputation of Skipton as a tourist destination
  • Create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly townscape

Skipton in Bloom also run the annual Skipton Gardening Competition where residents, allotment holders and businesses compete for prizes distributed at an awards ceremony each September.

They hold regular meetings which are informal and friendly and open to anyone with an interest in improving the local environment.  Many supporters are happy to receive meeting notes so they can keep up to date with activities or offer advice, whilst others like to be much more involved and are happy to get their hands dirty!

Get Involved

Practical workdays are held on the first Wednesday of the month and volunteers meet at 9.30 am at the Diamond Jubilee Community Garden on Newmarket Street (next to the Yorkshire Housing offices).  From there, jobs are allocated around the town.  Anyone is welcome to just turn up and lend a hand for as long as they want – it’s advisable to bring gloves, and small tools such as trowels are always useful.
