We were hearing rumours about the old fire station being refurbished, and an exciting new business launching in Skipton. So we got in touch with Heather Bullock, who is one half of the husband and wife team embarking on the new venture to find out what their new studio was, and what the people of Skipton can expect from them in the future!
Who’s behind Fire House Studios?
We are a married couple who met while working as professional dancers and choreographers. Howard has been running a Latin American and Ballroom school in and around Craven for about 9 years and for the past decade I (Heather) has been teaching dance classes as a freelance teacher.
Why did you decide to embark on this venture?
After having 3 children and realising the struggles of fitting in fitness around family life and finding the struggles of going to the gym after experiencing the body changes that come with children I have retrained to a level 3 REP’s registered level in fitness instruction and personal training specialising in Pre and Post Natal exercise and exercise for the older population.
When did it all start?
We teamed up to refurbish the first floor of The Old Fire Station into a dance and fitness studio, Fire House Studios. From there Howard runs Fire House Dance providing lessons in Latin American, Ballroom, Street Dance and Freestyle Dance. Classes run for children from 18months all the way up to adult classes and some students (who want to) go on to compete at Blackpool’s Winter Garden Ballroom at the National Championships. The new studio has provided a real community feel amongst his students with many of them giving up their time over summer to help re-decorate and many have commented on how they now have a place that feels like their own….. a dance home, something that couldn’t be accomplished when hiring different venues around Skipton to run the classes. Howard is bringing all different types of dance to the studio such as Salsa and burlesque!
What classes can we expect?
I run Siren Fitness. A fad-free fitness service for women and it has been really popular with Mums young and old. I wanted to create somewhere that women could go to exercise that was an alternative to going to the gym, where women could participate in exercise and get fit in
a way that is achievable and sustainable. Lot’s of women who are now regulars at the classes have been very shy to exercise in the past, feeling self-conscious in the regular fitness environment.
Siren Fitness has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and lot’s of the classes concentrate on deep core muscles, realigning posture and fixing the difficulties caused from having and rearing children and it has had a big confidence boost for many. We have a variety of classes running throughout the week from various instructors so there is something for every lady. I also offer personal training, with budget and private group options to make the service accessible. We will soon be running over 50’s and over 60’s classes and anti-natal and postnatal classes with instructors who are specifically qualified to work with these groups of ladies.
When did you open?
Our studio was opened on Aug 31st this year by local actress Karen Blick, who presently stars in Emmerdale, in a small evening celebration. We are both very excited about the future of Fire House Studios and the events it will house.
What events do you have coming up?
One event happening in November is a film screening. Tarn and Moon (tarnandmoon.co.uk) have chosen to use Fire House Studios to host their screening of The Goddess Project on November 11th and tickets are still available for this event.
I can’t wait to see what the studio will be used for and we hire it out for dance, fitness, art and photography and it makes a great space for this due to the amazing natural light coming in from our full-length arched windows.
