Dalesgate Lodge Ready To Take On 2018 After Refurbishment

Skipton B&B owners Emma and Dan Sadler are looking forward to ringing in 2018 in their newly refurbished Dalesgate Lodge.

The couple recently finished a programme of renovation at the Gargrave Road business – work they thought would take five years to do, but achieved in under a year.

It will be the couple’s second Christmas at Dalesgate Lodge. They moved to the town with their two sons, Alexander and Sebastian, from Leeds in October 2016.

Taking over the running of Dalesgate Lodge was somewhat of an ‘about-turn’ for Emma and Dan. Dan, who manages the business on a day to day basis, is former head chef at a large hotel in Harrogate, having trained in Switzerland and at the Savoy Hotel London. When working in Harrogate he appeared on BBC2 with the late Sir Terry Wogan, showcasing dishes cooked with local ingredients. Emma is a solicitor and continues to do this throughout the week – helping out at the B&B at the weekend.

Whilst Dan found being a chef gave him an extremely rewarding career, he decided to take a step away from this to pursue his dream of running his own business, putting him in charge of the hours he worked and giving him more time with family.

When Dalesgate came up for sale, the couple saw great potential. Emma said: “It was a well-established B&B and our vision was to build on the success of the previous owners and create a future for our family.

“The building dates back to 1885 and we’ve been keen to showcase the period features and ensure the building has a definite nod to its Victorian roots with the installation of an original style front door and entranceway and fireplace within the breakfast room. We’ve balanced all this with a desire to create modern, light and airy rooms and we hope our guests experience a high quality and welcoming B&B, from the décor, to the service, to the quality of the breakfast.”

Their hard work is paying off and the B&B is already attracting lots of excellent feedback from guests who have stayed over the past 12 months.  They’ve also started seeing the benefit of the excellent press coverage Skipton has been receiving, recently securing a booking from a resident of the US who had seen the glowing article on the area in the New York Times!

Emma continued: “We are really pleased with how the business is doing but most importantly, how well our family is settling into Skipton life. The boys both go to Parish Church Primary School and play football for Embsay Juniors. They really enjoy living in a B&B and of course, the pocket money it earns them on a weekend!”

Dalesgate Lodge is open for business over Christmas and New Year (apart from being closed December 24 to 27).
