A community grants scheme is set to provide local groups with more crucial funding after Craven District councillors agreed it should continue.
The Ward Member Grant scheme allows community groups to apply to their local councillors for cash to provide community run events, services and facilities.
Each ward councillor has a maximum of £1,000 to give out to local organisations.
The scheme was introduced in 2016 and the council’s Policy Committee agreed to extend the trial for another year at a meeting on June 6. The decision still needs to be approved by full council, which takes place on August 1.
Councillor Linda Brockbank, lead member for Working with Communities at Craven District Council, said: “I’m delighted that this new scheme has been able to help so many deserving community groups across the district.
“We introduced these grants to ensure that every ward in the district gets their fair share of cash to help their own local projects.
“The huge range of projects supported over the last year, spread across all wards, shows how well this has worked. Smaller projects, which might not previously have applied for grants, have also been successful in securing funding.
“We’ve helped fund Selfa’s activities for children, we’ve helped improve village halls in Gargrave, Embsay, Draughton and Long Preston, and we’ve helped buy new defibrillators for communities in Gargrave, Barden and Thornton in Craven.
“We’ve supported community arts projects such as Grassington Festival, Fallfest and Settle Photography Exhibition and Skipton Community Orchestra, and local sports groups including Skipton CI Cricket Club, Ingleton Swimming Pool and Settle Wheelers. Overall we’ve funded 55 projects, across all wards in the district, and we look forward to supporting many more over the next year.”
Ward budgets can also be used to fund joint projects between two or more wards, although there will now be a cap preventing any individual project from receiving more than £2,000.
The budget for the scheme is £30,000, with £15,000 coming from the New Homes Bonus.
