As well as being the politest place in the country, Craven was recently voted the happiest place to live in the UK. So we thought we’d cast our analytical eye at our fair town and take a look at some of the parts of Skipton life, which might help to explain this fantastic new accolade!
Here are 10 reasons why Skipton is the happiest place in the UK!
We Have An Unrivaled Community Spirit
The community spirit in Skipton is unparalleled, along with the vibrant calendar of events which often brings the community together; we’ve got each other’s backs here in Skipton. Proof of this can easily be found, the fantastic efforts with Samuels Rainbow is a splendid example of how the community can band together.
We’ve Got Some Incredible Charities
From OXFAM to The Principle Trust, there is certainly no shortage of kind hearted folks who dedicate their time and efforts to make Skipton one of the most charitable places around. We’re exceptionally proud of the great work they do, which we are lucky enough to report on regularly! And you can often find the likes of the Skipton Craven Rotary Club out in force raising cash for a myriad of causes.
The Santa Fun Run Is Just Incredible…
Speaking of the Skipton Craven Rotary Club, The Santa Fun Run has become one of the highlights of the year, where thousands of people gather to run, dressed in full Santa attire to raise money for countless good causes, including a Manorlands, Cancer Support and many more! We adore this event and can’t wait for this year.
Sheep Day Is A Blast!
Where else would have a day dedicated to Sheep! Often a talking point for those who live outside of Skipton, it’s a fantastic day all about Skiptons spirit animal! It must be experienced to be appreciated!
Our Restaurants Are Impeccable
Keelham Farm Shop, a restaurant within a supermarket with a passion for local, high-quality ingredients; The Tempest Arms, an 18th century Arms with a menu full of British classics; and Le Caveau a traditional French restaurant with a contemporary twist. Skipton restaurants cater for all tastes and are about as eclectic as they come!
We’re THE Gateway to the Dales
Often referred to as ‘The Gateway to the Dales’, Skipton is one of the first places that springs to mind when those outside the county consider a visit to the Yorkshire Dales. How can you be miserable when England’s finest countryside is right on your doorstep?
Our Schools Aren’t Too Bad Either
We are lucky enough to have a number of primary and secondary schools within the area, in which we can confidently entrust our children’s education. Skipton Girl’s High and Ermysted’s Grammar both achieve excellent results and often feature high in the league tables.
The Market Wins Awards!
People flock to our town by the coach load just to enjoy our famous High Street market. Local cheeses and preserves, reasonably priced clothing and quirky home accessories, all make it into the trolley bags and rucksacks of eager tourists. In the winter months, we up our ‘market game’ with numerous indoor and outdoor Christmas events, such as the Aire valley Christmas Market and Skipton Christmas Market.
We Probably Have The Best Cafè Scene, Too
As much as some of us moan about the number of cafès in Skipton, there is no denying that we have some absolute gems! Cake’ole in Craven Court attracts visitors from all across the county and if you’ve tried their generous portions of cakey goodness, then we don’t need to tell you why. Nom nom…
And Who Can Forget The Bars…
There really is a bar to suit everyone. From Skipton Sound Bar and its unique combination of traditional Yorkshire ales and vinyl records, to recently opened Alexander’s and its mammoth menu of trendy cocktails and Gins with a twist, you’re bound to find a drinking establishment for every occasion!
