Local Stone Mason, Chris Swales, Managing Director of Swales in the Dales is offering a unique all day stone carving course, giving students an insight into the age old craft of stone carving, which he has become well known for in the region.

With over five years’ experience in the craft, Chris is responsible for a myriad of impressive carvings across Skipton, including a fantastic piece which he recently completed in Skipton Castle Woods which is pictured below.

Chris said “I started offering to do courses in September 2016. I wanted to do it because people kept saying they’d love to learn it or to just have a go.

The students can go away from the course with a bit of knowledge about carving and could get some tools and practice at home or we will be offering an advanced course later next year.”

The course is run from Be A Garden Maker at Wigglesworth and costs just £65 for the day, which includes refreshments.

Running from 10 am – 4pm, Chris described the skills that students will learn throughout the day “I run a practice session in the morning to get everyone used to working with the stone, but more importantly the tools. In the afternoon the students will mark out a piece of stone with their initials or house number and take it home to keep.”

And the work that the students create by the end of the day is impressive and a testiment to Chris’ skill as a tutor, here is a photograph of one of the works created by one of his recent classes

Irene Savu attended the course and said “Chris is a great, talented guy. I attended one of his stone carving courses and had a fantastic day. Chris was so patient and knowledgeable. I have since bought a number of stone items from him and I am so pleased with my bespoke purchases.

I was so impressed with him; I put his name forward to give a talk at the WI at which I am a member. The talk/demonstration went really well and was well received and enjoyed by all who attended. I can highly recommend Chris.”
