5th Skipton Parish Church Scout Group is asking for community votes to receive nearly £2000 in order to make important improvements to its headquarters.
The local scout group, which celebrated its 100th-anniversary in 2015, has been shortlisted to receive part of a £300,000 fund created by M&S Energy to support energy efficiency initiatives. It is in competition with seven other groups across North Yorkshire to secure the funding, for which there is up to £12,000 available for individual projects.
The groups dilapidated headquarters in central Skipton, affectionately known as ‘The Dump’, suffer from a leaky roof, and no running hot water. Acquiring part of the fund would allow the group to fit better insulation, and add an energy-efficient combi-boiler system. The group is also looking to add disabled access and facilities, and hopes in future to promote the building as a space for the whole community.
The group’s leader, local farmer James Tiplady says; “The Dump has been our home for over seventy years, but it’s showing its age and this money would really help. We need to update our HQ to carry on offering Skiptons young people the adventure and fun of Scouting.”
