Team Summer

By Alexis Wilson-Barrett

Back in February 2017, we brought you the story of Summer-Rose Thompson. The tiny toddler had been born with a rare genetic disorder called Noonan Syndrome and had been in and out of hospital for various treatments, including open heart surgery. At the start of 2017, this brave little girl and her family were faced with another fight; Summer had been diagnosed with Leukaemia.

Becky and Gareth Thompson have spent most of this year at the hospital bedside of their young daughter. She has undergone numerous invasive procedures, gruelling chemotherapy treatments and a Bone Marrow Transplant. It has been an emotional rollercoaster for all of them, but as a family, they have put on a united front and battled on with admirable courage.

Earlier this week, Becky and Gareth made a heartbreaking update on their ‘Team Summer’ Facebook page.

“It’s with a broken heart that I write this status. Little Tink’s Leukaemia has returned and because it is in the 1st year of transplant they cannot do another bone marrow transplant.  If she was well enough they might have been able to give her more chemo but there’s no way she is strong enough for that so now the focus is getting her home, keeping her comfortable and making memories.”

Summer With Mother

Despite Summer’s medical team doing all they could to cure her of this terrible disease, this brave little warrior is just too weak to fight another battle.  Becky and Gareth took their little girl home last night, where everything will be done to make her comfortable and the family will spend some time making precious final memories together.

The financial impact of having such a poorly young child is immense. For this reason, family friend Rachel Barraclough has started a GoFund me campaign to help raise money for the Thompsons. Donations will help to ease some of their financial worries and go towards funding some of those special memories that the Thompson family want to create for their beautiful daughter’s final days.

As a Mother, I cannot begin to imagine how heartbroken this young family are. Your child becomes part of you from the moment they are conceived. You do all you can to love, protect and nurture the little person you created. You proudly share photos of the first day at school, first Nativity plays and other special moments that most families take for granted. The Thompson family no longer have such moments to look forward to. They have a lifetime of memories to make in short space of time. Please, if you are able, donate to the Team Summer fund and help her family to make as many happy memories as possible.
